Honeywell Security Businesses
A team is formed
In the Fall of 2016, then CEO & Chairmen of Honeywell, Dave Cote, mandated that we execute a "blitz" on our biggest competitor... all within 90 days. The original estimate for this project was 24 months.
Leaders across the product, engineering, and design disciplines quickly assembled a “special task force” scrum team, even pulling some members immediately off of other projects to support this high-profile initiative. I was one of those who received an email on Sunday to fly out the following Monday to New York and serve as the lead interaction designer.
Developers from Bangalore, India and Sydney, Australia were also flown into New York where our product leaders and largest customers were based.
Customer-centric & iterative design
Leveraging a unique sprint collaboration framework I designed, our team tackled this fast-paced project by integrating UX design and user testing within the same agile sprints as the developers.
In order to establish the trust from two distinct customer personas (large and small businesses), we met with over 15 customers onsite and designed iteratively over the next few months.
Our biggest challenge was balancing the needs of our “business manager” persona who needed an at-a-glance summary and our “technical operator” persona who wanted to take action on surfaced alerts.

Award-winning Results
After 90 days, our team successfully delivered Insights 360™, an analytics dashboard, that helps our customers understand, manage, and grow their business.
The release of this product not only outpaced our competitor but the timing allowed us to win the Most Valuable Product Award at the ISC West 2017 conference which took place in April 2017 and is the largest security convention in the US.

Process Framework
Two Personas
In a week-long design sprint workshop, our cross-functional team and stakeholders mapped out high-value problems across a customer journey map. Due to the tight deadline and pressure from our competitors, we identified two key personas to focus on.
Measurable Solutions
After we set measures of success both during and after the launch, we benchmarked our competitor. This informed us as we established a Northstar for outcomes that our solutions would have to deliver on.

Constraints
The original Gateway keypad given to us was so unusable that when our UX researchers tested in front of customers, it yielded a 90% failure rate and received super low confidence rating.
When I was brought onto this project, the printed circuit board layout was already finalized, the industrial design was complete, the project was under cost constraints, and the configuration system was incomplete.
My Role
My responsibilities on this project included leading the interaction design, creating high fidelity prototypes used in a usability lab, specifying LED light patterns, button behavior, user flows, and creating the final UI artwork for production.
Final Design
Coming from an industrial design background, I was able to leverage my experience with designing embedded UI for hardware and manufacturable materials and finishes.
The final design yielded a 95% success rate when tested and the product was finally released in 2016.
